Day 1 - Southampton

Wednesday 13th December 2023

Just time between the end of the last cruise and this one to get home, run the washing machine a few times and get back to Southampton for this cruise.

This time it’s a new cruise line, consequently a new ship, for us that is, and a novel itinerary.

So, the ship’s the Balmoral of the Fred Olsen Cruise Line.  The itinerary among some familiar ports of call includes a transit of the Kiel Canal (from the Elbe estuary to the Baltic).  Not many cruises use the Kiel as only smaller ships can fit.

Embarkation for this cruise is from the City Terminal, parking this time in the ABP Blue car park, park it yourself and then walk cases to drop-off.

In the terminal it’s through security first, then booking in, no queues at all!

Straight on board and we were directed to lunch in the Ballindalloch restaurant.  Selection of items from the buffet station for lunch with our first glass of wine, we have a drinks package with this cruise!

Cabins ready soon after 1pm.

After lunch visited our muster station, then a quick investigation to orientate ourselves with the ship on the way to our cabin.

Nice spacious room, no balcony this time, but a nice big window.  Lots of drawers and hanging space, much more than we need on this trip.

Afternoon cuppa in the Palms with proper gingernut biscuits.

Time to relax and settle in before dinner in the Ballindalloch.

Very good dinner and very pleasant waiting staff.

Back to cabin for an early night, worn out as usual.  A little sound from the theatre, but not much of a problem.

Clocks forward on hour tonight.
