Day 23 Puerto Quetzal, Guatemala

Monday 29th January 2018

Guatemala, a Central American country south of Mexico, is home to volcanoes, rainforests and ancient Mayan sites. The capital is Guatemala City.

Puerto Quetzal is Guatemala's largest port on the Pacific Ocean side of the country and is the gateway to the delights of Guatemala. The World Heritage Site of the colonial city of Antigua and the highlands and Lake Atitlan formed in a massive volcanic crater, described as the most beautiful lake in the world. The surrounding landscape has wonderful contrasting mountains and volcanoes, rolling hills, coffee fields, farmlands and coastline.

Berthed today in Puerto Quetzal, really jolly hot today, 32 centigrade and it’s only half eight in the morning.  In the distance we could see a couple of volcanoes one appeared to actually be active.

Managed a short trip ashore to visit the Mayan Market just by the ship.  Lots of very colourful locally hand made souvenirs.

A little oasis amongst the concrete of the commercial port and a haven for a few birds and with some nice warm rocks for the Iguanas to bask on with fish swimming alongside in case they are in need of a snack.

No proper trip for us today as they mostly are very long, a couple of hours each way on reportedly somewhat uncomfortable buses to get anywhere worth going.  Not really to our fancy.

Went ashore again just for some photos. Then enjoyed the sun.  Jolly hot today so in and out of the sun, just taking care while relaxing and catching up on some reading.
