Day 3 Hamburg, Germany

15th October 2023

The Port of Hamburg, located near the mouth of the River Elbe, was founded on the 7th May 1179 by Frederick the First. It remained central Europe’s main port for centuries.  Known as Germany’s “Gateway to the World” it is the countries largest port by volume, the third largest in Europe and the 15th worldwide.

Very early, still dark, view of lights along the Elbe River passing, back to sleep, much too early.

Proper day started berthed in Hamburg, at the Steinwerder Terminal, weather overcast, cool and rainy, luckily light winds.

Location of berth and weather conditions pretty much ruled out any chance of visiting the town so a nice day of the ship planned.

Started with a more civilised breakfast in the buffet, a good deal quieter today, perhaps it’s the number of passengers leaving us today making for less of a scrum.

Tried a coffee in the Euribia Lounge, not great.  Time for the morning trivia, today it’s celebrity caricatures, sadly no win again today.

The day spent mainly keeping busy doing nothing, it’s just so easy.  Nice views over the city and the passing weather.

Dinner tonight in the buffet.

A very pleasant evening in the Carousel Lounge, a couple of cocktails and a show by “The Big Band” with a selection of rock classics, very good, always nice to have live music, must have been at least a dozen musicians and two singers.

Then time to retire.
