Day 21 - Venice Italy

Friday 12th October 2018

Venice, long revered as one of the most beautiful cities in the world, lies at the head of the Adriatic Sea in the salt-water Laguna Veneta. Resplendent with graceful palaces and churches, the city is built on 118 small islands and laced with a unique network of canals and bridges. Full of enchanting discoveries from architectural delights to the romance of the gondola.

Early start just to watch the sail in up the Guidecca Canal through Venice, sun just coming up.  Always such a pleasure to see Venice and St Mark’s Square, no crowds at this time of day.

No rush today as this is an overnight stop, we decided to take advantage of the  Cunard Shuttle Boat today, which runs every 15 minutes.

Once we were ready off we go to catch the boat into town.  Nice little ride and drop off near St Mark's Square.

By chance met our dining table companions on the boat, they all off for a Gondola ride, good luck to them and then goodbyes all round.  They are all heading off home tomorrow.

In town we just did the tourist thing and walked round St Mark’s Square and worked our way through the labyrinthine streets and alleys to the Rialto Bridge.

Very busy everywhere, long queues for all the main sites, the Doges Palace, St Mark’s and the Campanile, streets packed, job to find room to get a photo of anything!

Of course on the way took advantage to have a gelato.  Always much enjoyed here, though we can never find the name shop twice running!

The canals of Venice are amazingly busy with ‘traffic’ of all sorts. Gondola’s, water taxi’s and vaporetto’s.

Back to the boat for return to the ship and to relax out in the sun and have some afternoon tea.

Later back onto the shuttle to go into town again for the sunset and just to enjoy Venice by night. We always seem to just have night views of Venice whilst sailing out on a big liner, so makes a change to see it from the town.

Gondoliers finished for the day

Wonderful place once the crowds thinned out a bit, eventually, amazing number of people about all the time.

Boat back to the ship, just a light dinner, chose Pizza, in view of our location.

Overnight in port, and the last day of this cruise, with lots of suitcases appearing in the corridors.
